Queer Minds Matter, August 2022
Queer Minds Matter is a unique program that runs mental health awareness sessions for LGBTIQA+ people.
The project began last year when Emma O’Loughlin teamed up with Margie Fischer from Feast Queer Youth Drop In to run 3 sessions about BPD and mental health for the LGBTIQA+ community, with a small grant for Mental Health Awareness Month. They received overwhelming feedback asking for more workshops, which led to receiving a DHS grant to continue the sessions this year. They are expanding the project to Elizabeth, Hackham, Mt Barker, St Mary’s and the CBD.
In each session they will share stories of recovery from a lived experience perspective, do a group activity to challenge stigma and reframe narratives, build skills to better manage distress and create a toolkit in the form of a tote bag that participants can take with them at the end of the session.
The first Queer Minds Matter event for 2022 is being held this Friday, September 2nd, from 6:30pm - 8:30pm at Grenville Hub in Elizabeth.
The events are free to attend, open to all ages 15+ years and light refreshments will be provided. These workshops are co-ordinated and facilitated by Emma O’Loughlin, who shares her lived experience of recovery to provide opportunities for learning in a relaxed and friendly space.
