Blood donor restrictions for gay men should be removed, Victorian Government says

he Victorian Government has called on its federal counterpart to end the ban on men who have sex with men from donating blood.

Key points:

  • Current restrictions prevent men from donating blood within 12 months of having sex with another man
  • State and federal ministers have agreed to review the national donation policy in 2017
  • According to the Red Cross, the risk of infection from a blood donation is less than one in 1 million
