New HIV notifications have dropped 30 per cent in the first six months of this year in the Metro North and South areas, compared to the previous five-year average.

The results, detailed in the latest HIV Foundation Queensland annual report, show the state records among the best results in the nation.

Rapid 90 minute testing for chlamydia and gonorrhoea will soon be implemented by the RAPID peer-led HIV and syphilis testing program.

The innovative testing technology, known as GeneXpert™, has shown to improve regional sexual health services in remote Australian communities and will now be adopted to support urban community programs.

Adoption of rapid STI testing will enable full STI screening for men who have sex with men, and other target populations at risk with results delivered within hours of taking the tests. By being able to rapidly diagnose a wider range STIs the pilot program carries the potential for transforming the delivery of sexual health services within the Brisbane community.
