Fifteen million out of 16.7 million unwanted pregnancies a year could be avoided in 35 low- and middle-income countries if women had the opportunity to use modern methods of contraception, according to a study that applies to about one-third of the world’s population.

Does contraceptive jab make HIV more likely?

“Contraceptive injections moderately increase a woman’s risk of becoming infected with HIV,” The Guardian reports.
The headline was prompted by an analysis of 12 studies, but these results do not prove the injection directly increases the risk of HIV.

Australian biotech company Starpharma has announced the imminent launch of a condom coated with an antimicrobial chemical.
While it might be marketed as a great leap forward for preventing sexually transmitted infections (STIs), it’s unlikely to offer any more protection than your average condom.
