Auckland Sexual Health Service’s Dr Sunita Azariah says a lack of resources is hampering its ability to contact trace and control the spread of syphilis.

And according to Azariah, in areas like south Auckland it is growing due to poverty and poor access to healthcare.

According to the Ministry of Health in New Zealand syphilis has been increasing since 2012, particularly in men who have sex with men. But syphilis rates in heterosexual men and women have also been increasing.
