Second HOW2 course announced for 2019

Our first course filled up, and as a result we are pleased to announce a second HOW2 course for this year! The HOW2 CREATE LGBTI INCLUSIVE SERVICES training program is an in-depth, practical program which helps organisations reach their inclusivity goals and potentially achieve accreditation as an inclusive service.

Delivered over 4 separate days, interspersed with time to implement practical improvements to your workplace’s inclusivity, this program will provide immediate benefits to your organisation.

The program is based on a set of 6 national standards developed by Gay and Lesbian Health Victoria (GLHV), in conjunction with QIP (Quality, Innovation & Performance), known as Rainbow Tick Accreditation. SHINE SA was the first South Australian organisation to be awarded Rainbow Tick accreditation for LGBTI inclusive practice and is proud to support other organisations to create safer and more inclusive workplaces and services.

**If you are a not-for-profit or community youth-focused service you may qualify for the Department of Human Services Training subsidy.

Responding to LGBT conversion therapy in Australia: report

This report highlights the nature, extent and impact of LGBT conversion therapies in Australia.

The report is designed to help government, support services and faith communities to better respond to those experiencing conflict between their gender identity or sexual orientation and their beliefs.

The everyday experiences of LGBTI people living with disability

This report documents the effects of systemic discrimination on the health and wellbeing of LGBTI people with disability.

It is divided into two key sections. The first reviews the national and international research and policy literatures on the impacts of systemic discrimination, disadvantage and social exclusion on the health and wellbeing of LGBTI people with disability and their access to services.

The second, smaller section presents preliminary analyses of unpublished data on LGBT people with disability from Private lives 2: The second national survey of the health and wellbeing of LGBT Australians (2012).

KEY FINDINGS:

The review found that research, policy and practice on the health and wellbeing of LGBTI people with disability in Australia is fragmented, under-resourced and relies on different, sometimes contrary definitions of ‘disability’.

The review documents higher rates of discrimination and reduced service access among LGBTI people with disability compared with people with disability and LGBTI people without disability; greater restrictions on freedom of sexual expression (particularly for LGBTI people with intellectual disability); and reduced social support and connection from both LGBTI and disability communities.

It documents a lack of professional training, resources and support for disability and allied health care workers for LGBTI people with disability. It also found that many disability services and workers are unwilling to address the sexual and gender identity rights and freedoms of LGBTI people with disability.

New round of ‘HOW2 Create LGBTI Inclusive Services’ starts in July!

Take action towards your diversity and inclusivity goals this year!  The new round of SHINE SA’s HOW2 Create Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender & Intersex (LGBTI) Inclusive Services program commences next month. 

This program can provide your organisation with a practical way to work towards increasing inclusivity and celebrating diversity

The program is based on a set of 6 national standards developed by Gay and Lesbian Health Victoria (GLHV), in conjunction with QIP (Quality, Innovation & Performance), known as Rainbow Tick Accreditation. First session is on Thursday 5 April 2018.

Four sessions held 6-8 weeks apart combined with workplace activities provide participants with increased knowledge and capacity in:
1. Auditing your service
2. Consulting consumers
3. Educating colleagues
4. Developing and implementing an action plan
5. Managing obstacles
6. Evaluating changes

This program, presented by SHINE SA, is based on a set of 6 national standards developed by Gay and Lesbian Health Victoria (GLHV), in conjunction with QIP (Quality, Innovation & Performance), known as Rainbow Tick Accreditation.

SESSION DETAILS:

Tasks are assigned prior to the first session and at the end of sessions 1, 2 & 3. These tasks involve practical activities at participants’ workplaces to start the change management process towards accreditation.

Important: Organisations can choose to be assessed against the 6 national standards through an external process undertaken by QIP in order to achieve the Rainbow Tick. The HOW2 training program can support organisations seeking to achieve this accreditation and is suitable for any organisation seeking to become more inclusive for LGBTI clients and staff.

Creating and sustaining a workplace that values and celebrates sexual and gender diversity has far reaching benefits for all of the stakeholders in your organisation. By providing a culture of safety and respect for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) employees, clients or other stakeholders, your organisation as a whole will benefit from a culture that values and upholds diversity of all kinds. Our Foundations of LGBTI Inclusion training is a half-day (4 hour) workshop that gives participants an overview of the knowledge needed to create an inclusive workplace.

It is low cost ($75 inc GST), and covers topics such as gender diversity, inclusive language and anti-discrimination laws. We will look at key areas of focus for increasing awareness and cultural sensitivity, creating a safe and inclusive environment and where to access further resources and support.
