HIV PrEP Update for GPs and Practice Nurses

This training will provide GPs, Nurses, and Health Professionals working in primary care an update on strategies available for the prevention of HIV transmission, focusing on prevention particularly pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP).

– Describe HIV epidemiology in Australia and the different HIV prevention
strategies
– Explain the role of HIV treatment and management
–  Provide patient education on the effectiveness and appropriate use of
PrEP/PEP
– Identify the prescribing pathways of PrEP within your local jurisdiction

This evening educational session will be presented by Dr Charlotte Bell, Sexual
Health Physician – Royal Adelaide Hospital.

HIV s100 Prescriber Dinner Update: 2018 IAS Conference Report Back and
Complex HIV Case Discussion

ASHM would like to invite HIV s100 Prescribers and medical practitioners in South Australia to attend this dinner training.

This dinner workshop will bring attendees an overview of the content showcased at the
2018 International AIDS Conference held in Amsterdam, as well as a number of complex HIV cases to discuss. The first session is a conference report back
session. Professor Mark Boyd will provide an update on the latest studies, important
developments and best research methods in the ongoing battle against HIV, AIDS and
related infectious diseases from the IAS Conference 2018.

The second session will be an interactive panel discussion, focussing on the
management of complex HIV cases. Panellists include Professor Mark Boyd, Dr Russell Waddell (Consultant Sexual Health Physician and Clinical Director STD Services, Royal Adelaide Hospital) and Dr Andrew Beckwith (Senior Consultant Psychiatrist, Director of Training, HIV/Hep C Liaison Psychiatrist, CALHN Mental Health). The session will be hosted by Dr Samuel Elliott (Principal General Practitioner, Riverside Family Medical Practice).

International Best Practice Guide to Equality on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity

Behavioural Support Practice Guides for young people with a disability

University of NSW’s Intellectual Disability Behavioural Support Program has released practice guides for behaviour support programs for young people with a disability.

  • Being a planner with a person with disability and complex support needs

This Planning Resource Kit is intended to strengthen existing good practice and to provide guidance for engaging a person with complex support needs in planning. The kit is aimed at workers in planning or related roles, such as case managers or service coordinators, who engage with people with complex support needs.

  • Understanding behaviour support practice guide: children 0-8 years

The purpose of this guide is to assist in the prevention and reduction of the development of challenging behaviour in young children aged 0–8 years. The development of challenging behaviour can place additional strain on families and support systems and their capacity to provide effective support to the child. It is intended that this material will assist support networks to address early stages of the development of challenging behaviour and to maintain capacity for effective support.

Child Living with HIV Maintains Remission Without Drugs Since 2008

A nine-year-old South African child who was diagnosed with HIV infection at one month of age and received anti-HIV treatment during infancy has suppressed the virus without anti-HIV drugs for eight and a half years, scientists reported today at the 9th IAS Conference on HIV Science in Paris. This case appears to be the third reported instance of sustained HIV remission in a child after early, limited anti-HIV treatment.

Working with gender diverse young people and their families

This recent webinar explored the information and skills needed for practitioners to work effectively with gender diverse young people and their families.

Increasing numbers of children and young people are identifying as gender questioning, gender diverse or transgender, and presenting for support from professionals in mental health, family services, and child and youth services.

Queerspace at Drummond Street Services has responded to many families presenting for assistance for themselves, their child, siblings and other family members or caregivers in dealing with the questions and challenges that arise from the experience of being gender diverse.

This webinar introduced ideas of gender and identity formation and discussed the struggles that individuals, families and services face in responding to the changing landscape in this area.

Adapted case studies from Queerspace’s own work were used to discuss ways of working with and supporting these young people and their family members. This webinar provided an opportunity to explore some of the essential information and skills needed for practitioners to deepen their understanding of gender, and work in an inclusive and affirmative manner.
